    The island had been left abandoned shortly before the colonists arrived, saving much bloodshed.
    Where the inhabitants were now remains a mystery.
    It was possible that the entire archipelago was uninhabited by humans.
    As the flag rose high above the palms there was a commotion; some men and a pregnant woman had washed up upon the shores of an island nearby.
    And as the sun began to sink into the Aegean, the sounds of chatter and laghter could be heard as the soldiers loaded guns onto the boat for the journey at first light.
